Kolkata Hotel Fire Claims Lives of Seven Bangladeshis, Including Journalist
A devastating fire at a residential hotel on Mirza Ghalib Street in Kolkata, India, has resulted in the deaths of nine people, including seven Bangladeshi nationals. Among the victims from Kusthia is journalist Debashish Datta, alongside his wife, three-year-old son, and father-in-law.
A tragic and devastating fire broke out at a residential hotel located on Mirza Ghalib Street in the city of Kolkata, within the Indian state of West Bengal. The severe blaze resulted in the tragic deaths of nine individuals who succumbed to suffocation inside the building. Among the total casualties, seven of the victims are confirmed to be Bangladeshi nationals who were staying at the premises.
The victims of the fatal incident include several members of a family from Kusthia, Bangladesh, who had traveled to India on August 3. The deceased have been identified as 39-year-old journalist Debashish Datta, his 27-year-old wife Afsana Sharmin, their three-year-old son Swarnashish Datta, and 64-year-old Akram Hossain, who was Debashish Datta's father-in-law. Other victims of the tragedy include seven-year-old Mahima Dutta, 40-year-old Ahmed Babu, 45-year-old Alimuzzaman Saju, Rebati Sarkar, and Sandeep Paswan.
Following the deadly incident at the Kolkata hotel, the mortal remains of the deceased victims have been transported to the morgue at Kolkata Medical College. The event has sent waves of profound shock and grief through the journalist community and the families of the victims in both Kusthia, Bangladesh, and Kolkata, India.
In the wake of the tragedy, educational institutions have stepped forward to support the affected families left behind. Mozammel Haque Russell announced that EduCare Ideal School and College has taken full responsibility for the education of seven-year-old Mahima Dutta up to her Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) level.
Detailing the scope of the educational support, Mozammel Haque Russell stated that the institution will cover all necessary expenses, including school tuition fees, examination fees, books, notebooks, and pens. He emphasized that the initiative was undertaken to ensure Mahima does not fall behind in her education due to the absence of her parents from the very beginning, noting that representatives visited the bereaved family in the morning to check on their overall well-being.
