Post-mortems completed for journalist Debashish Datta and relatives in Kolkata

Post-mortem examinations for Bangladeshi journalist Debashish Datta and three of his family members, who tragically lost their lives in a devastating residential hotel fire in the Indian city of Kolkata, have officially been completed at the Kolkata Medical College Hospital morgue. The autopsies were carried out on Thursday as part of the ongoing official and legal investigations into the fatal blaze that claimed multiple lives.

Journalist Debashish Datta had traveled to India along with members of his family on August 3 to seek medical treatment. According to the confirmed background information, he had spent thirteen days undergoing medical treatment in Bengaluru before the group subsequently traveled to Kolkata, where the fatal hotel fire ultimately occurred.

The tragic incident claimed the lives of nine people in total, with the journalist and four of his relatives among the deceased victims of the disaster. Following the completion of the post-mortem procedures at the hospital morgue on Thursday, local authorities and diplomatic missions have been working on the necessary protocols to handle the aftermath of the tragedy.

Officials from the Bangladesh Deputy High Commission in Kolkata, along with local contacts including Abdus Samad, Afsana Shimmin, Sornoshish Datta, and Md. Akram Ali, are coordinating the next steps in the process. The diplomatic mission is closely monitoring the situation to assist the grieving families.

Subject to the successful finalization of all required legal processes by the authorities of both countries, the mortal remains of the victims are expected to be brought back home to Bangladesh on Friday, allowing their families to proceed with funeral arrangements and final rites.
