On August 20, 2026, the Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh, Dinesh Trivedi, paid a courtesy visit to the Minister for Health and Family Welfare, Saker Sakhawat Hussain, at the Secretariat in Dhaka. The diplomatic engagement occurred against the backdrop of a devastating and tragic fire incident that recently took place in the neighboring country, drawing significant attention from officials in both nations.

The high-level meeting between the two officials follows a horrific blaze that erupted on a Wednesday at a residential hotel situated on Mirza Ghalib Street, near the New Market area in Kolkata. The horrific inferno resulted in the heartbreaking deaths of eight Bangladeshi nationals, which tragically included a young child among the victims, causing immense shock and grief on both sides of the border.

During their discussions at the Secretariat, Indian High Commissioner Dinesh Trivedi addressed the tragic incident involving the citizens of Bangladesh. Expressing his profound sorrow over the massive loss of life in the West Bengal capital, the High Commissioner remarked, "It is a matter of great sorrow. Whatever needs to be done, we will certainly do it."

However, while speaking to the media following the courtesy call, Health and Family Welfare Minister Saker Sakhawat Hussain clarified the specific scope and nature of the diplomatic discussions. The Bangladeshi minister explicitly stated to reporters that the tragic deaths of the Bangladeshi nationals in India were not formally raised by him during this particular administrative meeting.

Minister Sakhawat Hussain further elaborated on other diplomatic matters addressed during the courtesy visit, noting that the Indian representatives extended an invitation regarding the Prime Minister. According to the health minister, the Indian delegation mentioned that they are hopeful and expecting the Prime Minister to visit India in the future, as they have formally invited the premier.
