In a significant judicial development in Dhaka, Bangladesh, the President has appointed Justice Md. Habibul Gani from the High Court Division to serve as a justice on the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court. This key appointment marks an important structural update for the highest court of the country, reinforcing its judicial bench with an experienced jurist from the High Court.

The formal announcement of this elevation was officially processed through a gazette notification issued on Thursday, August 27, 2026. The Law and Justice Division under the Ministry of Law formally released the notification, detailing the official transition of Justice Md. Habibul Gani from his previous responsibilities in the High Court Division to the Supreme Court's Appellate Division.

According to the official disclosures, the appointment has been executed in direct accordance with the provisions outlined in article 95 (1) of the national constitution. Furthermore, the administrative framework stipulates that this judicial appointment will officially take effect starting from the exact date and time when the newly appointed judge takes his formal oath of office.

Following this latest elevation to the apex court, the total number of active judges serving within the Appellate Division will officially stand at five. This numerical update expands the capacity of the bench as it continues to handle vital legal cases and supreme appellate matters within the jurisdiction of the Bangladesh Supreme Court in Dhaka.

To formalize the transition, the Supreme Court has scheduled the official swearing-in ceremony for the upcoming Sunday. Mo. Shafiqul Islam provided details regarding the event, stating, "Chief Justice will administer the oath of office to the newly appointed justice to the Appellate Division at 9:30 AM next Sunday." The solemn oath-taking ceremony will take place inside the Supreme Court Judges' Lounge.
