Bangladesh Presidential Election Set for August 20 in Dhaka

The upcoming presidential election in Bangladesh has officially entered its final competitive phase as the date for the crucial parliamentary vote approaches. Election authorities have confirmed that the high-stakes political contest is scheduled to take place on Thursday, August 20, inside the main parliament chamber located in the capital city of Dhaka.

The electoral race features a direct contest between two prominent political figures. BNP candidate Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir is competing against Colonel (Retd.) Oli Ahmed, who has been nominated as the candidate for the 11-party alliance led by Jamaat. Both candidates have maintained their positions in the race, as official election records verify that no candidate withdrew their nomination within the designated time frame.

Voters participating in this parliamentary election comprise a total of 349 eligible voters within the national parliament. The Election Commission has finalized the scheduling for the voting process, which will be conducted during a strict three-hour window on Thursday, starting from 2:00 PM and concluding at 5:00 PM inside the parliamentary room.

This extraordinary presidential election was necessitated by political developments earlier in the summer. Specifically, former President Mohammed Shahabuddin vacated the office after officially stepping down from his position on July 24, setting the stage for the current parliamentary proceedings to elect a successor.

As the election date arrives on August 20, the Election Commission oversees the final arrangements at the national parliament in Dhaka.
