ECNEC Approves 10 Projects Worth Over Tk 9,300 Crore in Dhaka

The Executive Committee of the National Economic Council convened a meeting on Wednesday at the NEC conference room of the Planning Commission, located in Sher-e-Bangla Nagar, Dhaka. The high-level government session was presided over by Prime Minister and ECNEC Chairperson Tarique Rahman, bringing together key officials, ministers, and advisors to review and evaluate major national development initiatives.

During the proceedings, the council officially approved a total of 10 development projects involving an estimated financial outlay of 9 thousand 333 crore taka, specifically noted in official documents as 9 thousand 333 crore 58 lakh taka. Out of these total approvals, six initiatives represent brand new development projects, while the remaining four are revised schemes aimed at expanding or modifying ongoing infrastructure and administrative works.

In addition to the project approvals and revisions, the meeting featured the formal unveiling of a strategic five-year roadmap focused on national development and comprehensive reform. This newly released strategy document, prepared through the General Economics Division and associated bodies, sets forth structural guidelines and developmental priorities for the coming years to steer the country's economic trajectory.

Despite the broad approvals granted during the session, certain high-profile proposals faced deferral or outright exclusion from the final endorsement list. Notably, the proposed project aimed at procuring two product oil tanker vessels for the Bangladesh Shipping Corporation did not receive final approval. According to official statements, discussions during the meeting highlighted that four oil tankers had been discussed under a Memorandum of Understanding during the Prime Minister's visit to China, prompting officials to verify potential duplication before making a final decision.

Elaborating on the decisions made regarding environmental and infrastructural proposals, officials addressed the status of the Turag River protection initiative. Mo. Zonaed Abdur Rahim Saki explained that instead of proceeding with the initial Turag River protection and conservation project in its first phase, authorities are now considering a broader, integrated project spanning from the Turag River to the Buriganga River. Consequently, this proposal was withheld so it could be formulated on a much more extensive scale.

The meeting concluded with directives regarding the implementation of the newly cleared schemes, which include a mix of large and mid-sized undertakings. Among the participants and figures associated with the broader administrative and planning framework of the session were Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury, Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, Sheikh Robiul Alam, Mo. Shahiduddin Chowdhury Annie, Iqbal Hasan Mahmud, Mo. Asaduzzaman, Mohammad Amin Ur Rashid, and Sardar Mo. Sakhawat Hossain.
