US Ambassador Brent Christensen Meets Bangladesh Ministers in Dhaka

US Ambassador Brent Christensen held an official meeting in Dhaka with senior officials of the Bangladesh government, specifically meeting with Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives State Minister Mir Shahe Alam and Minister Dr. Abdul Moyeen Khan. The diplomatic engagement centered on expanding cooperation between the government of the United States and the government of Bangladesh, with both sides agreeing to deepen their strong existing relationship and move it further forward in the days ahead.

During the discussions, State Minister Mir Shahe Alam detailed the activities and progress of the Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives over the past six months, noting how these initiatives align with the government policies and election manifesto. The talks specifically highlighted potential areas of foreign investment, with the State Minister noting that American cooperation has been assured through public-private partnership models in critical infrastructure sectors such as water supply, waste management, and renewable energy.

Addressing the pressing need for sustainable infrastructure development, the State Minister emphasized that renewable energy initiatives could effectively leverage waste-to-energy solutions. Pointing out that every city corporation currently deals with significant amounts of dumped refuse, the State Minister shared details regarding an ongoing project in the North City Corporation. An agreement has already been finalized with a Chinese company to process municipal waste into energy, with operations expected to supply approximately 40 megawatts of electricity directly to the national grid within the next 18 to 20 months.

State Minister Mir Shahe Alam noted that following these comprehensive discussions on municipal development, the US ambassador indicated that the American side will formally notice and further discuss these proposals. Furthermore, the State Minister clarified that the discussions during the meeting strictly pertained to the mandate of the local government ministry, while emphasizing that matters concerning other sectors fall under the purview of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Commerce.
