Sylhet Agricultural University Protests Suspended for Three Days
Protests demanding the resignation of the Sylhet Agricultural University vice-chancellor have been temporarily suspended. The three-day halt comes out of respect for the president's scheduled visit to Sylhet.
The ongoing agitation demanding the resignation of Professor Dr. Md. Alimul Islam, the vice-chancellor of Sylhet Agricultural University, has been temporarily halted following a strategic decision by the protesters. The demonstrations, which involved continuous human chains and sit-in programs, had been actively organized by various campus factions including the Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal, the Shada Dal, and the University Officers and Employees Unity Council since last Monday, September 7, 2025.
According to the verified announcements made regarding the campus unrest, the suspension of these daily protests is directly tied to a high-profile state visit. Professor Dr. Mozammel Haque, who serves as the general secretary of the Bangladesh Nationalist Shada Dal at the Sylhet Agricultural University branch, formally addressed the reasoning behind the temporary stand-down during the mobilization period.
Professor Dr. Mozammel Haque explained the scheduling adjustment by stating that the president and university chancellor is scheduled to arrive in Sylhet on Tuesday, September 15. Out of a desire to show proper respect and maintain appropriate decorum for the chancellor's visit, the participants decided to hold off on their aggressive campaigning for a brief window.
Consequently, all scheduled human chains and sit-in demonstrations across the Sylhet Agricultural University campus will remain paused starting from Sunday, September 13, through Tuesday, September 15. The temporary hiatus is intended solely to accommodate the presidential itinerary while the broader administrative crisis involving the vice-chancellor's tenure remains unresolved.
However, the leadership of the movement has made it clear that the pause in campus demonstrations is strictly temporary rather than a permanent cancellation of their demands. Professor Dr. Mozammel Haque confirmed that the agitation will resume with renewed vigor immediately following the conclusion of the presidential visit, with human chains and sit-in programs restarting on Wednesday, September 16.
