Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University Marks Landmark Anniversary

Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University officially marked its 25th anniversary as a full-fledged university on March 30, 2026, in Dhaka, Bangladesh. This significant milestone highlights a rich and enduring 88-year history of agricultural education and movement that has shaped the academic and practical landscape of the region for decades. The commemoration serves as a testament to the long-standing dedication to agricultural sciences that began well before the institution achieved its modern university status.

The roots of this prestigious institution stretch back to December 11, 1938, when the institution was originally established as the Bengal Agricultural Institute. Over the course of its long and evolving history, the institute underwent several notable name changes to reflect the changing geopolitical and administrative landscape. It was subsequently known as the East Pakistan Agricultural Institute and later as the Bangladesh Agricultural Institute, commonly referred to as BAI, before eventually paving the way for its modern university designation.

The journey toward university status gained definitive momentum when the Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University Act was officially enacted on September 11. Following the legislative process, the institution was formally declared a full-fledged public university on January 6, 2001. This crucial transition elevated its academic standing, allowing it to expand its curriculum, enhance its research capabilities, and offer advanced degrees under its own autonomous university governance structure in Dhaka.

In the years following its transformation into a full-fledged university, the institution has experienced substantial academic growth and expansion. At the present time, Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University proudly accommodates more than 6,000 students who are actively engaged in pursuing higher education. These scholars are distributed across various specialized faculties and departments, where they receive comprehensive training in modern agricultural sciences and related disciplines.

Throughout its remarkable 88-year history of agricultural education, the institution has remained deeply intertwined with the intellectual and agricultural development of the nation.
