Rangpur Civil Society Demands Impartial Probe Into Family Murder
Citizens under the banner of Sujon staged a human chain in Rangpur on August 26, 2026, demanding an impartial investigation and trial of the masterminds behind the brutal killing of a retired school teacher and three family members. Speakers at the protest rejected claims that the murders were committed simply by drug-addicted youths over interference, calling for deep scrutiny into the tragic incident.
On August 26, 2026, the district and metropolitan branches of Shushashoner Jonno Nagorik (Sujon), alongside the Fob Zila Forum and Youth Ending Hunger, organized a human chain protest in front of the Rangpur Press Club premises. The demonstration was staged to demand an impartial investigation and the trial of the ultimate masterminds responsible for the horrific murder of a retired school teacher and four members of his family in Rangpur.
The tragic event came to light on the night of Saturday, August 22, 2026, when law enforcement authorities recovered the lifeless bodies of retired school teacher Gaponati Chakraborty Jewel, his wife Pritilata Chakraborty Bhola, their daughter Agami Chakraborty Prarthi, and their son Ayus Chakraborty Priyam. The victims were found dead inside their own residence located in the Kamal Kachna Mashuapara (Daspara) area of Rangpur city.
In the wake of the grim discovery, rapid police action led to the apprehension of Mugdha Das and Siddhartha Das in the early hours of Sunday, August 23, 2026. Following their arrest, both suspects reportedly gave judicial confessions under section 164 before the court regarding their involvement in the devastating crime.
Despite the quick arrests, civil society leaders expressed deep skepticism and dissatisfaction with the narrative surrounding the massacre. During the human chain protest at the Rangpur Press Club, Khandaker Fakhrul Anam Benju strongly asserted that one or two drug-addicted youths could not possibly have wiped out four individuals in such a manner. He explicitly stated that the claim of the murders occurring solely due to intervention against Yaba consumption was entirely unacceptable for wiping out an entire family through such a brutal execution.
Fakhrul Anam Benju further criticized the local security apparatus during the demonstration, noting that although police stations and various wings of the police department have expanded in Rangpur, police inactivity has not decreased. He remarked that the desired bridge between the public and law enforcement has not been established, emphasizing that both the state and ordinary citizens ultimately demand proper service and security from the police.
As public scrutiny intensifies over the handling of the case, procedural changes have been implemented within the law enforcement agencies. The investigation into the quadruple murder case has been officially transferred from the Kotwali Police Station to the Detective Branch (DB). Alongside this jurisdictional shift, DB Officer-in-Charge Jinat Ali has been assigned as the new investigating officer to lead the ongoing probe.
