National Highways Get Ambulance and Traffic Services to Boost Road Safety

A major new initiative was launched on August 24, 2026, at the Roads Department building in Tejgaon, Dhaka, aimed at strengthening rapid medical care following road accidents and improving traffic management across national highways. Road Transport and Bridges Minister Sheikh Rabiul Alam officially inaugurated the new fleet of emergency and patrol vehicles during an official event held at the venue.

The newly introduced fleet comprises a substantial number of specialized vehicles designed to provide prompt medical assistance and monitor highway conditions. Specifically, the rollout includes sixty basic life support ambulances, forty motorcycle ambulances, and eighty patrol motorcycles, all intended to enhance response capabilities along major transit routes.

Under the operational framework of this new service, the highway system has been organized so that a dedicated ambulance will be positioned along a fifty-kilometer stretch of roadway, ensuring that an emergency vehicle is available approximately every ten kilometers to assist accident victims and patients in urgent need of medical transport.

These newly commissioned vehicles have been integrated into the national infrastructure under the framework of the Bangladesh Road Safety Project (BRSP). The project itself is financed jointly by the Government of Bangladesh and the World Bank to address critical safety concerns on the country's roads and highways.

The implementation of the comprehensive road safety project is being carried out through a coordinated effort among several key organizations. These implementing partners include the Roads and Highways Department, the Bangladesh Police, the Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA), and the Directorate General of Health Services.
