Mirza Abbas Returns to Parliament After Medical Leave
BNP leader Mirza Abbas returned to the national parliament in Dhaka after nearly five and a half months of medical treatment abroad. Speaking from a wheelchair, he marked his first parliamentary address since 2006.
Mirza Abbas, a senior leader of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and political adviser to the Prime Minister, has made a notable return to the national legislature in Dhaka. Representing the Dhaka-8 constituency as a member of parliament, Abbas resumed his legislative duties on September 3, 2026, during a session of the Jatiya Sangsad.
His reappearance at the national parliament building followed an extended absence of nearly five months, or approximately five and a half months, spent receiving medical treatment in Singapore and Malaysia. The prolonged medical leave had kept the prominent politician away from political and parliamentary activities for a significant period following health complications earlier in the year, which included suffering a stroke on March 11, 2026.
Upon his arrival at the parliament, Abbas participated in the proceedings while seated in a wheelchair, drawing considerable attention from fellow lawmakers. Notably, his address on September 3 marked the first time he had spoken in parliament since 2006, ending a legislative speaking hiatus that had lasted for two decades.
Addressing the assembly during the session, Abbas offered remarks regarding his ongoing health status and his motivation for returning to the legislature. "My treatment is still not finished. Even so, I had to come because of emotion and affection," he told the parliament.
Fellow politicians acknowledged the significance of his return to the legislative body after his lengthy recovery period abroad. Hafiz উদ্দিন আহমদ welcomed his presence, stating on record, "Mirza Abbas saheb has come to parliament after a long five months. We thank him."
The parliamentary session was attended by various political figures and officials associated with the Jatiya Sangsad, the BNP, and the Prime Minister's Office, including figures such as Kaiser Kamal, alongside Hafiz Uddin Ahmad. Throughout his political career, Abbas has maintained ties to the lineage of Ziaur Rahman and Begum Khaleda Zia within the party structure, culminating in his current roles as a BNP standing committee member and a political adviser to the Prime Minister's Office.
