During his visit to the parliamentary complex, the Indian High Commissioner formally met with the Speaker of the Jatiya Sangsad, Hafiz Uddin Ahmed. In addition to this primary engagement, Indian High Commissioner Dinesh Trivedi also held discussions with Deputy Speaker Barrister Kaiser Kamal at the exact same parliamentary location in the capital.
During the high-level discussions, Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmed addressed the historical trajectory of bilateral ties between the two neighbouring nations. The Speaker remarked that the relationship between Bangladesh and India has continuously advanced through various complexities and tensions. He emphasized that this historical relationship has undergone distinct changes depending on the contexts of different historical periods, reflecting a multifaceted diplomatic history.
The Speaker of the Jatiya Sangsad also addressed domestic political history and democratic transitions during the meeting. Hafiz Uddin Ahmed stated that through stage-managed elections held in the years 2008, 2014, 2018, and 2024, the Awami League government severely undermined and infringed upon the democratic rights of the general public. He further elaborated that the student-led mass uprising in the year 2024 successfully paved the way for a renewed journey toward democracy in Bangladesh.
Furthermore, Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmed critically evaluated the foreign policy and bilateral dynamics during the previous administration. He noted that during the tenure of Sheikh Hasina, the bilateral relationship between Bangladesh and India remained fundamentally government-centric rather than inclusive. He strongly asserted that the true foundation of Bangladesh-India relations must instead be rooted in the direct connections between the citizens of both countries, requiring the relationship to move forward based on mutual respect and strict adherence to each other's independence and sovereignty.
In response to these perspectives, Indian High Commissioner Dinesh Trivedi underscored the commitment of the Indian government to fostering closer ties. The High Commissioner stated that the Indian government is deeply interested in building a people-centric relationship between the two nations. He added that the current government is actively working to fulfill the aspirations of the people of both countries through the systematic construction of robust people-to-people connectivity and engagement.
Highlighting the broader cultural and historical ties, Indian High Commissioner Dinesh Trivedi affirmed that both nations are bound together by shared history, culture, tradition, and mutual interests. Expanding the scope of parliamentary discussions, Deputy Speaker Barrister Kaiser Kamal noted that Bangladesh has already taken proactive initiatives to introduce an e-parliament system. Consequently, Barrister Kaiser Kamal officially expressed his expectation and desire for active cooperation and assistance from India in successfully implementing this technological advancement within the legislature. Finally, during these diplomatic exchanges at the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban, the Indian High Commissioner officially conveyed a formal invitation from the Speaker of the Lok Sabha, inviting the Speaker of Bangladesh to undertake an official visit to India.
