3rd Session of 13th Jatiya Sangsad Begins Thursday in Dhaka

The third session of the 13th Jatiya Sangsad is officially scheduled to begin on Thursday, August 27, in Dhaka, marking a significant continuation of parliamentary activities following the conclusion of the previous meeting. The parliamentary session was formally summoned by acting president Hafiz Uddin Ahmad, who exercised his constitutional authority to call the legislature into session on August 11. This upcoming gathering follows closely on the heels of the second session of the Jatiya Sangsad, which concluded its official proceedings earlier in the year on July 15.

Prior to the commencement of the main parliamentary proceedings on Thursday, a crucial preparatory meeting of the business advisory committee, known locally as the karjo upodesta comiti, is scheduled to sit at 2:00 PM. This committee meeting will help establish the agenda, determine the precise schedule, and manage the workflow for the parliament members representing various political organizations and entities, including notable figures such as Tarique Rahman, Dr. Shafiqur Rahman, Mir Ahmad Bin Quasem (Arman), Dr. Abdullah Mohammad Taher, and Nurul Islam Moni, alongside the broader legislative body managed by the parliament secretariat.

Parliamentary operations in the Jatiya Sangsad involve a comprehensive framework of legislative committees, encompassing a total of fifty parliamentary committees across the institution. This extensive structure includes thirty-nine ministry-related standing committees and eleven subject-based committees designed to oversee various governmental functions handled by the cabinet and associated administrative bodies. Out of this total count, fifteen committees have already been formed, while the remaining thirty-five committees are scheduled for official formation during the ongoing legislative proceedings.

The allocation of leadership within these parliamentary bodies has drawn notable attention, particularly regarding the distribution of committee chairmanships among the political parties represented in the legislature. Although eleven committee chairmanships were originally slated to be designated for the opposition, reports and evaluations of the committee structure indicate that only a single chairmanship position has ultimately been secured by the opposition benches. Meanwhile, institutional oversight bodies such as the National Human Rights Commission, along with specialized security units including the Rapid Action Battalion and the Special Response Battalion, continue to operate within the broader national governance context.

As lawmakers gather in Dhaka for the opening of this third session, parliamentary analysts and officials from the parliament secretariat project that the current gathering may run for approximately eleven working days. The deliberations are expected to cover a wide range of legislative matters and committee formations, providing a comprehensive platform for the elected representatives and political leaders to address national affairs as the thirteenth parliament advances through its scheduled legislative calendar for the year.
