Dhaka Faces Severe Traffic and Suffering Amid Widespread Road Construction
Widespread road digging, construction projects, and waterlogging are causing severe traffic congestion throughout Dhaka. Commuters are enduring immense suffering as vital thoroughfares and sidewalks remain disrupted by ongoing infrastructure works.
Dhaka is currently grappling with widespread road digging, construction work, and severe waterlogging that are collectively causing severe traffic congestion and immense suffering for residents and commuters alike. Across various neighborhoods in the capital city, the urban landscape has been heavily disrupted by infrastructure projects, leaving major routes heavily compromised.
Road digging is actively taking place across the city to facilitate critical infrastructure initiatives, including sewerage lines, metro rail projects, drain renovation, and the relocation of essential utility lines. However, the presence of construction materials, hazardous potholes, and persistent waterlogging on both dug-up roads and pedestrian sidewalks is severely disrupting normal movement and triggering massive, prolonged traffic jams.
Specific neighborhoods are experiencing distinct infrastructure-related disruptions. In the South Basabo and Sabujbagh area, elevated expressway construction work has resulted in dangerous potholes and significant waterlogging. Meanwhile, ongoing metro rail project activities, which include necessary utility line relocation, have substantially narrowed the crucial roadway stretching from Malibagh to Khilgaon.
Other areas are dealing with the aftermath of incomplete restoration or ongoing heavy machinery operations. While underground drainage work in Notun Bazar has officially finished, the road itself has notably not been repaired yet. Furthermore, metro rail construction work is currently ongoing right in the middle of Badaldi road in Baunia, leaving only very narrow spaces on both sides for vehicular passage.
Additional hazards are present on Bhatara road, where excavated soil, heavy concrete blocks, and various construction materials have been dumped directly onto the roadside. These obstructions are the result of ongoing footpath and drainage construction projects, further compounding the daily transit challenges faced by the population of Dhaka.
