Magura Authorities Seize and Burn 12,000 Meters of Banned Nets
Administration officials in Magura's Sadar upazila conducted a mobile court drive on Saturday, seizing and burning thousands of meters of illegal fishing nets. During the operation, a local individual was fined for possessing the banned equipment.
In a decisive move against illegal fishing practices, local authorities in Magura have seized and subsequently destroyed a massive quantity of banned fishing gear. The operation, which targeted illegal nets commonly known as China duari and current nets, resulted in the confiscation of 12,000 meters of prohibited equipment.
The mobile court operation took place on Saturday, August 22, 2026, at approximately 2:00 PM. The enforcement teams carried out their inspections in the areas of Kullia Bazar and Burail Beel, located under the jurisdiction of Kuchiambra Union within Magura Sadar upazila.
During the course of the administrative drive, enforcement personnel targeted specific properties linked to local resident Apoorba Roy. Authorities recovered 135 pieces of China duari nets, measuring approximately 10,000 meters in total length, from Roy's house and shop. The total market value of all the seized illegal nets combined across the operation is estimated at 600,000 taka.
As a consequence of possessing the banned fishing gear, Apoorba Roy faced legal action on the spot. The presiding mobile court imposed a financial penalty, collecting a fine of ten thousand taka from the offender for violating regulations regarding the prohibited nets.
Following the conclusion of the mobile court proceedings, the entire stock of confiscated illegal nets was publicly burned to ensure they cannot be returned to use. The administration has signaled that such enforcement measures will remain a priority moving forward.
Meherunnahar, the Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) of Magura Sadar, addressed the operation following its completion. The official confirmed that the local administration's ongoing crackdown and operations against all forms of banned nets will continue without interruption.
