The 145-metre-long Kamrangirchar Lohar Bridge in Dhaka has officially reopened following extensive renovation work. Funded entirely by the Dhaka South City Corporation, the upgraded bridge will now be restricted exclusively to pedestrian use.
The newly renovated Kamrangirchar Lohar Bridge in Dhaka has officially reopened following a completion period of just 25 days. Funded entirely through the internal budget and direct supervision of the Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC), the infrastructure project aims to significantly improve local transit conditions for the surrounding population.
The reopening ceremony took place on August 28, 2026, marking a major milestone for the area. The event was attended by high- profile officials, featuring the DSCC Administrator, Freedom Fighter Md. Abdus Salam, who served as the chief guest for the inauguration, alongside Member of Parliament for Dhaka-7, Hamidur Rahman, who participated as the special guest.
Physical specifications of the structure indicate that the Kamrangirchar Lohar Bridge measures 145 metres in length and 4.2 metres in width. Following the completion of these comprehensive renovation works, authorities have designated the bridge exclusively for pedestrian movement, meaning motorized vehicles and other forms of transport will no longer be permitted to cross it.
Local authorities have highlighted the immense daily utility of the crossing, noting that approximately 70,000 people utilize the bridge every single day for their routine commuting needs. Officials estimate that the structural improvements and the restriction to pedestrian-only traffic will ultimately benefit 5 million citizens directly.
Addressing the public during the inauguration ceremony, DSCC Administrator Freedom Fighter Md. Abdus Salam emphasized the local government's ongoing commitment to public welfare. He stated that the city corporation remains fully dedicated to making urban commuting both smooth and safe for all residents, pointing to the successful execution of this project within record time using internal funding as a clear testament to that ongoing promise.
