Heavy Rainfall and Waterlogging Disrupt Chattogram Amid 3 Number Alerts
Chattogram experienced severe waterlogging across multiple areas following torrential rainfall from Sunday through Monday morning. Authorities have recorded significant precipitation levels as coastal ports face local warning signals.
Chattogram has experienced severe weather conditions marked by heavy rainfall and subsequent waterlogging across various neighborhoods. According to the verified timeline provided by the Met Office, the continuous downpour began on Sunday and persisted through Monday morning, significantly disrupting daily life in the port city.
Meteorological data released by the Patenga Weather Office indicates that 189 millimeters of rainfall was recorded in Chattogram over the 24 hours leading up to Monday morning at 9:00 AM. Furthermore, the intensity of the storm escalated sharply during the early morning hours, with 109 millimeters of rain pouring down within a strict three-hour window between 6:00 AM and 9:00 AM.
The combination of intense precipitation and tidal pressure resulted in widespread waterlogging across several key areas of the city. Residents in neighborhoods suchKatalganj, Panchlaish, Muradpur, Chawkbazar, and Agrabad faced significant inundation as municipal infrastructure struggled to cope with the sudden influx of water.
Addressing the situation, Ikhtiyar Uddin Ahmed Chowdhury noted the compounding environmental factors during the morning hours. He stated that in the morning there was heavy rain coupled with pressure from tidal water, which is why water accumulated in some areas, while adding that city corporation workers are actively working to drain the water.
In response to the recurring crisis, ongoing efforts to mitigate the waterlogging problem involve massive financial investments. Specifically, the Chattogram City Corporation, the Chattogram Development Authority (CDA), and the Water Development Board are currently implementing four separate projects with a total budget of 14.257 billion taka, equivalent to 14,257 crore taka.
Amid these weather developments, broader regional alerts have been issued for maritime zones. Chattogram, Cox's Bazar, Mongla, and Payra sea ports have all been instructed to hoist local warning signal number 3 as severe weather conditions continue to impact the coastal and port regions.
