Health Minister Visits Family of Conika Rani Following Surgical Death

On August 21, 2026, Health Minister Sardar Md. Sakhawat Hossain visited the residence of the late Conika Rani, also known as Conika Mondal, in Baghutia village under Baharpur union of Baliakandi upazila in Rajbari district. The high-profile visit comes in the wake of widespread public concern and grief surrounding the tragic death of the mother, which has drawn intense scrutiny toward medical practices and standards in the country.
According to verified reports, Conika Rani died as a direct result of surgical negligence when medical gauze was left inside her abdomen during a C-section operation. The initial procedure was performed on June 29, 2026, at the Samarita Hospital in Faridpur by Dr. Lakshmi Rani Dutta. Following complications arising from the botched operation, the patient's condition deteriorated before she ultimately passed away on August 19 at approximately 2:15 AM at a hospital in Kalyanpur, Dhaka, specifically identified as the Ibn Sina Hospital.
In response to the tragedy, the Health Ministry has taken decisive administrative action by establishing a five-member investigation committee to thoroughly examine the circumstances surrounding the fatal error. The newly formed panel has been formally instructed to submit its comprehensive investigation report within the next five working days, ensuring accountability for those found responsible for the severe lapse in medical care.
During his visit to the grieving family in Rajbari, Health Minister Sardar Md. Sakhawat Hossain distributed financial assistance, personally handing over 50,000 taka to support the bereaved relatives. He emphasized that the government is closely monitoring the situation and stated that Prime Minister Tareq Rahman, local BNP leaders, and the entire administration will stand by the affected family during this difficult time.
Reiterating the government's zero-tolerance policy toward substandard medical practices, the Health Minister issued a stern warning during his address in Baghutia village. He explicitly stated that any form of negligence in medical treatment will not be tolerated under any circumstances, and assured the public that strict punitive actions will be taken against all individuals linked to the medical negligence in accordance with existing rules and regulations.
