Godagari Fertilizer Dealer Jailed for Illegal Stockpiling
A fertilizer dealer in Rajshahi's Godagari has been sentenced to rigorous imprisonment for illegal stockpiling. Meanwhile, the administration has announced that there are adequate fertilizer reserves across the Rajshahi division.
On September 8, a mobile court in Godagari, Rajshahi, sentenced a fertilizer dealer to one month of rigorous imprisonment for unlawfully hoarding large quantities of agricultural fertilizers. The punitive action was taken during an administrative drive against illicit storage practices that threaten local farming supplies.
Executive Magistrate and Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Israt Jahan led the raid at the establishment named Messrs Krishi Ghar, located in the Daingpara area of Godagari sadar. During the operation, the mobile court successfully recovered 200 sacks of MOP fertilizer and 300 sacks of TSP fertilizer that had been illegally detained by the dealer, Soleyman Patwari.
Following the raid, UNO Israt Jahan explained the necessity of the enforcement action to the public. She stated that dealer warehouses and sales centers are currently being closely monitored to ensure that fertilizers are duly supplied according to the actual demands of farmers. She noted that inspections revealed Krishi Ghar actually held a larger quantity of fertilizer than what was officially supposed to be in stock, which ultimately led to the dealer receiving a one-month jail sentence handed down by the mobile court.
Amidst concerns over supply, Divisional Commissioner Yusuf Ali visited the BDC fertilizer warehouse situated in the Naodapara area to assess the regional inventory firsthand. His inspection aimed to verify the actual availability of agricultural inputs and reassure the public regarding the current distribution network overseen by the Upazila Agriculture Office, BCIC, BADC, the Bangladesh Agricultural Development Corporation, and the Department of Agricultural Extension in Rajshahi.
Addressing the broader situation in the region, Divisional Commissioner Yusuf Ali confirmed that there is currently no crisis concerning fertilizer availability. He emphasized that warehouses possess adequate stocks, and fertilizers are being regularly supplied to authorized dealers according to allocations from the Ministry of Agriculture for retail distribution.
Furthermore, Yusuf Ali pointed out that misleading information circulating outside appears to have triggered unwarranted panic and confusion regarding supplies. Reassuring local stakeholders, he stated that the fertilizer reserves inside the warehouses remain clearly visible to everyone, asserting firmly that there is nothing hidden about the current inventory levels in the division.
