Mirsharai Primary Schools Face Monitoring Crisis Amid Staff Shortage
Mirsharai Upazila faces an acute monitoring crisis in its primary education sector due to a severe shortage of officials. Only one assistant education officer remains on duty to oversee numerous institutions and thousands of students.
Educational institutions and primary schools across Mirsharai Upazila in Bangladesh are currently facing a severe monitoring crisis. This administrative challenge stems directly from an acute and prolonged shortage of education officers within the local administration, leaving critical oversight duties severely strained across the entire region.
According to official data from the Upazila primary education office, the region encompasses 191 government primary schools that collectively serve approximately 25,911 students. In addition to the government-run institutions, the upazila's educational landscape includes 45 kindergarten schools with about 7,000 students, two private primary schools, and six Ebtedayee madrasas enrolling roughly 500 students. In total, the primary education sector accounts for more than 33,000 students and approximately 1,350 teachers spread across these various institutions.
Despite the large volume of schools, students, and teachers requiring administrative oversight, the staffing situation at the Upazila primary education office has reached a critical juncture. The organizational structure calls for nine Upazila assistant education officers to manage and monitor the educational activities. However, the department currently has only one officer actually working on the ground.
The staffing deficit has developed over an extended period. Seven of the designated assistant education officer positions remained vacant for more than a year. The situation deteriorated further when another officer was transferred away from the upazila roughly two months ago, leaving a lone official to shoulder the massive workload.
Administrative capacity is further hindered by shortages in support staff within the office. Out of five designated office assistant positions, three are currently vacant, while a position for a peon has also remained vacant for a long duration. These persistent vacancies at the Upazila primary education office continue to hamper routine administrative functions and proper institutional monitoring.
