Padma River fish market thrives in Rajshahi's Charghat
A traditional morning fish market on the banks of the Padma River in Rajshahi's Charghat upazila draws buyers for fresh catches and fingerlings. Local fishermen and vendors gather daily at the Bottola area to trade various river fish species.
Every morning, a vibrant fish market is organized beneath the banyan tree by the banks of the Padma River in the Nogarpara area of Sahapur village, located in Charghat upazila of Rajshahi district. This bustling marketplace has established itself as a notable local hub where individuals gather to buy and sell fresh catches directly from the river waters, according to verified reports covering the region.
The market features an array of aquatic life, with vendors offering diverse species that include piyali, bele, boal, air, chital, punti, pangas, rui, and katla. In addition to mature table fish, traders have engaged in the commerce of river fish fingerlings at this specific location for approximately 18 to 20 years, contributing to the local aquaculture economy.
Market pricing varies significantly depending on the species, size, and availability of the catch. While certain varieties are traded at rates ranging from 200 to 500 Bangladeshi Taka per kilogram, others command higher prices of 700, 800, or even 1,000 Taka per kilogram. Specific market shifts are evident in historical comparisons; for instance, piyali fish, which previously sold for 200 to 250 Taka per kilogram, now commands between 700 and 750 Taka per kilogram. Similarly, bele fish transactions are recorded at prices ranging from 800 to 1,100 Taka per kilogram.
Local participants who frequent the marketplace include individuals identified as Md. Waz Ali, Md. Nazmul Shah, Md. Mamunur Rashid, Abdullah Al Awwal, Md. Azad, Md. Kamruজ্জামান, Mahmud Badshah, Md. Babu Ali, and Nader Ali. These community members participate in the daily operations, purchases, and sales that sustain the longstanding marketplace infrastructure.
Reflecting on the hardships and dedication required to sustain this traditional livelihood, local fisherman Nader Ali shared perspective on the realities of working on the river. Describing the daily struggles faced by those who harvest the waters, Nader Ali stated, "Our lives involve a lot of hardship. We catch fewer fish. But catching fish is an addiction."
The marketplace itself has maintained a continuous operational presence for approximately 20 years, serving as a primary commercial anchor for riverine trade in the Sahapur Nogarpara Bottola area. Through changing economic conditions and fluctuating fish populations, the morning gathering continues to connect Padma River fishermen with consumers seeking fresh local fish and fingerlings.
