DNCC Deploys 'Gavid Trap' System to Combat Mosquito Menace in Dhaka
The Dhaka North City Corporation has initiated a mosquito control drive using the 'Gavid Trap' method. Authorities have collected 65 traps from the Bangladesh Atomic Energy Commission for this public health effort.
In an ongoing effort to tackle the vector-borne disease threat in the capital, the Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) has officially undertaken a new initiative to control mosquitoes by deploying specialized devices known as 'Gavid Traps'. This municipal vector-control strategy marks a specific technological intervention by the city administration to monitor and reduce mosquito populations across designated zones within its jurisdiction.
As part of this newly adopted operational plan, the Dhaka North City Corporation has successfully collected a total of 65 'Gavid Traps' directly from the Bangladesh Atomic Energy Commission. These scientific surveillance and trapping units form the core hardware for the municipal corporation's expanded mosquito suppression framework in the urban area.
Elaborating on the background of this vector management approach, Brigadier General Imrul Kayes noted that three 'Gavid Traps' were previously imported from China and installed at the Ashkona Hajj Camp in Uttara. He stated that this initial deployment yielded a positive response, prompting the DNCC to pursue procuring additional units. Although subsequent procurement efforts stalled because the supplier quoted an excessively high price, he maintains the view that each individual trap can realistically be sourced within a budget of 30,000 taka.
Looking ahead at the spatial distribution of these devices, the municipal authorities have formulated initial plans for where the units will be installed. According to the deployment strategy, the 'Gavid Traps' are primarily scheduled to be set up in the immediate vicinity of several major medical facilities, including the Kurmitola General Hospital, the Shishu Hospital, and the Bangladesh-Kuwait Maitree Hospital.
In addition to the hospital perimeters, the operational layout also includes the deployment of these mosquito traps at the Diabari depot area of the metro rail network. By targeting these specific high-traffic and sensitive locations across Dhaka, the Dhaka North City Corporation aims to systematically execute its mosquito control initiative utilizing the acquired Bangladesh Atomic Energy Commission equipment.
