DNCC Dengue Patient Data Initiative Reveals Coordination Gaps

The Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) has undertaken a new public health initiative aimed at curbing the spread of dengue fever by collecting patient data directly from hospitals. Under this program, designated personnel are tasked with gathering information from medical facilities to subsequently visit the homes of affected individuals and destroy potential Aedes mosquito breeding grounds.

This municipal effort comes amid a sharp escalation in the national dengue situation. Official records show that total dengue cases surged by 67 percent over an 18-day period, rising from 15,310 cases recorded on July 31 to 25,601 cases by August 18. Concurrently, the death toll associated with the mosquito-borne virus increased from an earlier figure of 54 to 74 fatalities.

Despite the urgency of the public health crisis, practical execution of the DNCC initiative has encountered early setbacks. During visits to the Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital and the Bangladesh Shishu Hospital in Shyamoli, assigned data collectors were found to be missing from the premises, highlighting operational inconsistencies on the ground.

Reflecting on the absence of personnel during hospital visits, data collector Rakibul Islam noted that it was his first time visiting a hospital on August 17, and he was unaware whether anyone else had previously collected information from the facility.

Addressing the administrative hurdles, DNCC chief health officer Imrul Kayes Chowdhury acknowledged that the absence of specialized and dedicated manpower caused some initial difficulties. He noted that the initiative is still in its preliminary phase and will become more organized as experience is gained.

The newly introduced data collection framework forms part of broader municipal measures against vector-borne diseases in the capital, operating alongside ongoing city corporation expenditures and allocations directed toward mosquito control management.
