Former minister and Awami League joint general secretary Dr. Dipu Moni has returned to the Munshiganj District Jail after completing her temporary release. Her return followed the conclusion of funeral and burial rites for her husband, Barrister Toufique Nawaz, who was laid to rest in the capital.
Dr. Dipu Moni was granted a 12-hour parole specifically to participate in the funeral prayers and subsequent burial of her late husband. Her legal detention status had changed previously when she was arrested on August 19, 2024, following the fall of the Awami League government.
The religious and burial services took place on Thursday, August 20. The schedule began following the Zohr prayers at the Gulshan Azad Mosque in Dhaka, where the funeral prayers were held, and concluded with the interment of Barrister Toufique Nawaz at the Banani graveyard.
With the expiration of her 12-hour parole period, administrative arrangements were immediately initiated for her return to custody. A prison van carrying Dr. Dipu Moni departed from the Banani area toward the Munshiganj District Jail at precisely 3:15 PM on Thursday afternoon.
The transport journey concluded later that evening when the prison vehicle carrying the prominent Awami League leader arrived at her destination. The prison van entered through the main gate of the Munshiganj District Jail at exactly 5:58 PM, marking the end of her brief absence.
