Dhaka University Central Students' Union Launches Teacher Evaluation Website

The Dhaka University Central Students' Union (Daksu) has officially launched a new online platform named the 'DU Evaluation' website, designed to collect student feedback and provide ratings for faculty members. The formal inauguration of the website took place last Thursday at 3:00 PM during a press conference held at the Daksu building on the university campus. According to the reported details, the initiative allows students to submit ratings based on a scale ranging from one to five. Approximately seven thousand students have already participated in this process by evaluating their respective teachers through the newly introduced digital platform.

The website is structured to assess various academic and professional aspects of the faculty. Ratings are being collected across several specific categories, which include course structure, teaching methods, student communication, examination processes, professionalism, and overall student satisfaction. This digital mechanism aims to compile student perspectives regarding their educational experience and classroom delivery under the auspices of the student union, marking a notable development in student-led academic monitoring at the historic institution.

Despite the rollout by the student body, the initiative has triggered a significant debate regarding institutional authority and jurisdiction within the university. University administration officials have openly questioned the propriety of the platform. Professor Abdus Salam addressed the development by stating that such initiatives do not fall within the official scope of Daksu's responsibilities. Echoing these concerns, Professor Mohammad Almozadzedi Alfeshani remarked that it is completely incorrect for Daksu to independently create and publicize such a website.

Further criticism came from Mo. Khorshed Alam, who explicitly characterized the student union's actions as an infringement on administrative duties. He stated that what Daksu is doing in the name of teacher evaluation amounts to an encroachment of authority. The controversy highlights a clear division between the student leadership's self-initiated accountability measures and the established administrative framework of Dhaka University regarding faculty assessment policies.

In response to the ongoing discourse surrounding the student-led platform, the university administration has clarified its own upcoming plans for academic evaluation. Officials stated that starting from the 2026-2027 academic session, students will officially be able to evaluate their teachers in accordance with the university's own independently formulated guidelines. This forthcoming administrative mechanism aims to formalize the evaluation process under official university policy, contrasting with the current digital platform operated by the student union.
