Bangladeshi Schoolgirl Dies After Surgery Sparks Investigation

A 14-year-old schoolgirl named Sohagi Khatun has died following an appendicitis surgery that has prompted health authorities in Bangladesh to launch a formal investigation into the circumstances of her passing. The young girl, who was an eighth-grade student at a local secondary school, underwent the surgical procedure late last month before her condition ultimately deteriorated and led to her tragic death earlier this month.

The sequence of events began on August 27, 2026, when Sohagi Khatun was taken to Monowara Sono Center and Nursing Home, a medical facility located in Jibannagar. At this clinic, a medical practitioner identified as Dr. Rafiqul Islam performed an appendicitis surgery on the fourteen-year-old patient. Following the operation, complications reportedly arose, necessitating further medical attention and her eventual transfer for advanced care.

As her medical condition worsened, the patient was subsequently moved to the National Institute of Neurosciences and Hospital in Dhaka for specialized treatment. Despite medical interventions at the capital city's neuroscience facility, Sohagi Khatun succumbed to her condition and passed away on the afternoon of September 6, 2026, while undergoing treatment there.

In the wake of her death, the father of the deceased teenager, Mominur Rahman Mondal, has spoken out regarding the tragedy and the medical treatment his daughter received. Expressing his grief and demanding accountability, he stated that his daughter had died due to improper medical treatment and the negligence of the doctors and nurses involved, adding a heartfelt plea that no other father should ever have to lose a cherished child in such a manner.

Responding to the family's concerns and the circumstances of the fatality, official administrative steps have been taken within the region. The Chuadanga Civil Surgeon's Office has officially formed a three-member investigation committee to look into the medical procedures and care provided to the student. Authorities have instructed this newly established panel to submit its formal investigation report within ten working days.
