Bangladesh Unveils New Pay Structure for Government and MPO Teachers

Bangladesh has officially announced a brand-new pay structure that significantly impacts government employees, primary school teachers, and MPO-enrolled teachers across the country. The crucial policy details regarding the updated compensation packages were revealed on September 1, 2026, during an official event held in Khulna, Bangladesh. The announcement outlines substantial salary adjustments across multiple grades, aimed at restructuring public sector and educational remuneration.

Speaking at the Khulna University of Engineering and Technology (KUET), Dr. A. N. M. Ehsanul Hoque Milan, who serves as the Minister for Education and Primary and Mass Education, elaborated on the implementation timeline of the financial revisions. According to the newly established pay structure, the updated financial adjustments for employees categorized from the 10th to the 20th grades will be implemented systematically across three distinct phases. Furthermore, the authorities have confirmed that all associated allowances tied to this new structure will officially become effective starting from January 1, 2028.

Under the newly introduced salary framework, specific updates have been designated for various professional tiers, particularly within the public education sector. Government primary school head teachers are designated under the 10th grade, while assistant teachers are recruited under the 13th grade. For individuals entering the 10th grade at the start of their careers, the new structure establishes a starting basic salary of 32,000 taka, with the maximum basic salary for this specific grade reaching 77,300 taka. Meanwhile, for assistant teachers entering at the 13th grade, the starting basic salary is set to increase significantly from 11,000 taka to 24,000 taka, with the maximum basic salary for the 13th grade touching 58,000 taka.

Further structural adjustments extend across other administrative and educational grades within the public service framework. Employees starting their careers within the 9th grade will see their initial basic salary increase from 22,000 taka to 44,000 taka. At the opposite end of the entry-level spectrum, the lowest tier within the framework, the 20th grade, will witness the starting basic salary increase from 8,250 taka to a new baseline of 20,000 taka.

Addressing the broader educational landscape, Education and Primary and Mass Education Minister Dr. A. N. M. Ehsanul Hoque Milan explicitly confirmed that MPO-enrolled teachers will also receive their salaries in accordance with this newly formulated pay structure. In addition to addressing domestic compensation reforms, the minister highlighted ongoing strategic priorities in the academic sector, stating that the government is actively working on emphasizing cross-border education.

Elaborating on the strategic vision for transnational academic collaboration at KUET, the minister emphasized the economic and intellectual advantages of the initiative. He noted that successfully launching cross-border education would result in substantial savings of foreign currency for the country. Additionally, the minister pointed out that this initiative would facilitate the domestic importation of valuable intellectual property, thereby strengthening the nation's broader educational infrastructure.
