Bangladesh Madrasah Board Seeks Action Over Zero-Pass Rate

The Bangladesh Madrasah Education Board has reached a decisive turning point regarding educational institutions under its administration that failed to record a single passing grade. Following a directive issued on August 11, the board thoroughly reviewed the formal explanations submitted by the heads of 226 madrasahs whose students completely failed their recent examinations. With the final deadline for providing these explanations having passed on August 23, the board evaluated the reasoning offered by the school administrators and concluded that the responses were entirely unsatisfactory.

Geographical data highlights a stark regional concentration of these underperforming institutions, with the highest concentration recorded in the northern parts of the country. A detailed breakdown across various regions reveals that the Rajshahi zone accounts for the highest number with 74 institutions, followed by the Rangpur region with 41 institutions. Furthermore, the Barishal and Dhaka zones each recorded 29 failing madrasahs, while the Khulna region registered 27. Additional figures show 18 institutions in Mymensingh, seven in Cumilla, and just one in Chattogram. Notably, the Sylhet region stands out as the only area with no madrasahs listed in the zero-pass category.

Addressing the justifications put forward by the administrators, Professor Khandaker Mohammad Sadekur Rahman detailed the board's official stance on the matter. According to Professor Rahman, the reasons cited by the heads of the 226 madrasahs for their complete failure failed to satisfy the board. He pointed out that the majority of these educational institutions suffer from very low student enrollment and poor academic instruction. Consequently, the board has finalized a decision to submit a formal written recommendation to the ministry very soon, urging official disciplinary action against the responsible parties.

Raising further questions about the validity of the excuses provided by the failing institutions, Professor Md. Faruk Ahmmed challenged the core arguments presented to the board. Professor Ahmmed questioned the logic of blaming systemic issues, noting that if curriculum changes or mobile phone addiction were indeed major factors, general schools would have experienced the exact same downward impact on their results. Furthermore, he highlighted a specific anomaly in the academic performance, questioning why madrasah students would fail in Arabic subjects specifically.

The administrative process stems directly from confirmed facts established by the Bangladesh Madrasah Education Board, which verified that the heads of these 226 madrasahs recorded a complete hundred percent failure rate among their student bodies. In strict accordance with the board's instructions, these institutional heads appeared in person at the board offices by the August 23 deadline to account for their catastrophic academic results. With the explanations officially rejected as inadequate, the pending ministerial recommendation marks the next critical phase in addressing institutional accountability within the national madrasah education framework.
