Bangladesh Issues Storm Warnings Across Ports As Monsoon Depression Deepens
Bangladesh has issued cautionary signals for four maritime ports and seven regional river ports following a monsoon depression. The meteorological system has moved across coastal regions into neighbouring areas.
Bangladesh has issued weather warnings across multiple maritime and river ports as a monsoon depression continues to influence atmospheric conditions in the region. According to official reports from the Bangladesh Meteorological Department, the weather system that was previously positioned over the southwestern-West Bengal coast and the adjoining northwestern Bay of Bengal has now shifted further inland. The active meteorological disturbance is currently located over Jharkhand and its adjoining areas, maintaining its influence on weather patterns across parts of the country.
In response to the intensifying system, maritime ports have been placed under advisory warnings. Authorities have instructed officials at the maritime ports of Chattogram, Cox's Bazar, Mongla, and Payra to hoist local cautionary signal number three. This directive is intended to alert vessels, shipping operations, and coastal communities to potential hazards associated with the prevailing meteorological conditions in the maritime zones.
Alongside the maritime alerts, inland waterways are also experiencing heightened precautionary measures. River ports situated across specific regions of the country have been issued designated warnings. The Bangladesh Meteorological Department has directed that river ports in Khulna, Barishal, Patuakhali, Noakhali, Cumilla, Chattogram, and Cox's Bazar regions must hoist cautionary signal number one.
The ongoing weather pattern is bringing hazardous wind conditions to affected waterways. Watercraft operating within the designated river port areas face potential risks from temporary meteorological disruptions, characterised by gusty or squally winds that can reach speeds between 45 and 60 kilometres per hour.
Meteorological authorities continue to monitor the progression and trajectory of the system as it moves further inland. Officials have advised all relevant transport sectors, river vessels, and local populations in the warned zones to remain vigilant and adhere strictly to the promulgated maritime and riverine safety signals until conditions improve.
