Bangladesh is currently facing a mounting employment crisis characterized by a high unemployment rate among university graduates and a stark mismatch between higher education outputs and actual job market demands. According to the Labour Force Survey 2024 published by the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS), the number of unemployed individuals in the country who hold university degrees has reached 885,000. This rising figure underscores the escalating challenges faced by young job seekers as they transition from academic institutions into a constrained professional landscape.

The statistical data for 2024 reveals that the unemployment rate specifically among youth with tertiary or graduate-level education has climbed to 13.5 percent. This represents a noticeable deterioration compared to the previous year, when the graduate unemployment rate stood at 13.11 percent in 2023. The persistent upward trajectory of these rates indicates that higher education credentials are increasingly failing to guarantee secure employment within the national economy.

A primary structural driver of this crisis is the wide quantitative gap between educational supply and economic demand. Educational institutions across Bangladesh collectively produce an average of approximately seven million—or seven lakh—students with degrees each year. In stark contrast, the formal job market generates only about three million—or three lakh—employment opportunities annually, leaving millions of qualified young people without viable prospects in the structured workforce.

When viewed within the broader macroeconomic context, the scope of joblessness remains expansive. The overall number of unemployed people across Bangladesh reached 2.624 million—or 26.24 lakh—individuals in the year 2024. This comprehensive total encompasses various segments of the workforce, with the graduate and youth demographic experiencing particularly acute vulnerabilities due to the structural imbalances in the labor market.

The persistent discrepancy between the massive influx of annual university graduates and the limited creation of formal jobs highlights a critical policy challenge for the nation. As the number of educated jobless citizens continues to climb toward nearly nine million degree-holders, economists and labor analysts point to the urgent need for structural reforms to better align educational outcomes with the actual demands of the modern employment sector.
