Bangladesh Faces Heat and Humidity as Low-Pressure System Forms
Bangladesh is experiencing rising temperatures and humidity due to a drop in rainfall, causing increased suffering from load-shedding. Meanwhile, a new low-pressure system has formed over the northwest Bay of Bengal and adjacent coastal areas, prompting local warning signals at maritime ports.
Bangladesh has been experiencing an increase in temperatures and humidity across various regions of the country. This uncomfortable weather condition is primarily attributed to a temporary decrease in rainfall, which has left residents grappling with stifling heat. The situation has been further compounded by power outages, with load-shedding significantly increasing public suffering during this period of heightened climatic discomfort.
Amidst these prevailing weather conditions, meteorological developments are underway. A low-pressure system has officially formed over the northwest Bay of Bengal and the-neighboring coastal regions of West Bengal and northern Odisha. This significant atmospheric system is currently influencing regional weather patterns and poses potential impacts for coastal areas.
As a direct consequence of this low-pressure system, maritime authorities have taken precautionary measures. The government agency has instructed the four major maritime ports of the country—specifically Chattogram, Cox's Bazar, Mongla, and Payra—to hoist local cautionary signal number three. Vessels and maritime operators in these regions are advised to remain alert to the developing weather conditions.
Looking ahead, the weather outlook indicates a shift in conditions over the coming days. The Bangladesh Meteorological Department forecasts that the tendency for rain and thunder showers will likely continue across various regions of the country over the next five days. Furthermore, meteorological projections suggest that some areas may experience moderately heavy to very heavy downpours during this forecast period.
Providing expert insight on the transient nature of the current climate, government meteorologist Shaheenul Islam addressed the situation. He noted that the current warm and humid conditions are very temporary and stated that temperatures are likely to decrease slightly starting Sunday. He further explained that another low-pressure system may form over the Bay of Bengal around September 1, which will help increase the tendency for nationwide rainfall starting Sunday. Although a low-pressure formation process has already begun over the sea, it has not yet reached a stage that requires an official announcement.
