Ailing Journalist Farzana Rupa Hospitalised in Bangladesh

Journalist Farzana Rupa has fallen ill while in custody and is currently receiving medical treatment at Bangladesh Medical University (BMU). According to official details, she experienced a sudden deterioration in her physical condition, which prompted authorities to transfer her to the medical facility on Sunday evening for necessary healthcare.

The events leading up to her current health situation stem from her initial detention last month. On August 21, 2024, Farzana Rupa and fellow journalist Shakil Ahmed were apprehended by law enforcement personnel at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka.

Following their apprehension at the airport, the legal proceedings against the journalists moved swiftly through the judicial system. A court subsequently granted a four-day remand for Farzana Rupa and Shakil Ahmed in connection with a filed murder case involving Fজলুল Karim.

In addition to the initial proceedings, the legal scrutiny surrounding Farzana Rupa expanded further as the investigation progressed. Authorities formally showed Farzana Rupa and Mozammel Haque Babu arrested in connection with a separate murder case related to incidents at Shapla Chattar.

Despite the ongoing legal cases, detention, and recent hospitalisation at Bangladesh Medical University (BMU), official updates regarding her physical condition have been provided to the public. Speaking on her health status, Mo. Jannat-ul Farhad stated that Farzana Rupa remains capable of walking.
