AI-Powered Auto Fine System Launches on Dhaka-Chittagong Highway
An artificial intelligence-driven automated fining system has been launched along the 250-kilometre Dhaka-Chittagong highway, utilizing thousands of cameras to monitor traffic violations. In the first 24 hours of operation, hundreds of vehicles faced legal action and fines totalling 1.5 million taka.
A new artificial intelligence-driven automated fining system has officially been launched along the 250-kilometre Dhaka-Chittagong highway to crack down on traffic violations and enhance road safety. The initiative, spearheaded by Highway Police, integrates a vast network of 1,427 cameras installed across the extensive route to monitor and penalize motorists who break the rules.
According to reports published by Prothom Alo and RisingBD, the newly implemented system resulted in hundreds of cases being filed against offending vehicles within the very first 24 hours of operation. While Prothom Alo recorded 441 cases against vehicles during this initial period, RisingBD reported a slightly higher figure of 452 cases. Out of the total actions taken, authorities confirmed that 13 cases were subsequently cancelled, while a staggering 1.5 million taka was levied in fines.
Shahinur Alam Khan, who serves as the Superintendent of Police for the Cumilla Region of Highway Police, detailed the specific types of infractions captured by the technology. He explained that the AI-powered cameras were initially configured to detect three primary categories of traffic violations: exceeding designated speed limits, driving in reverse or the wrong direction, and illegal parking. The vast majority of the cases filed during the first 24 hours were attributed directly to excessive speeding.
Breaking down the specific violations recorded during the opening window, police statistics revealed that driving beyond the prescribed speed limits accounted for 399 separate cases. Additionally, motorists driving in the wrong direction resulted in 29 recorded cases. Superintendent Shahinur Alam Khan further noted that the scope of the system could expand in the future, stating that the types of traffic violations detected by the AI cameras might be increased over time.
Authorities have already observed positive behavioral shifts among motorists since the technology went live. Superintendent Shahinur Alam Khan remarked that drivers have become noticeably more conscious since the launch of the AI-powered auto-fine cameras, which contributed to a subsequent reduction in the rate of legal cases. Echoing this sentiment, Mohammad Shahinur Alam emphasized that expanding these highway camera operations will further curb the tendency to violate traffic laws, ultimately strengthening overall road safety and discipline, with positive impacts already beginning to show.
