United States President Donald Trump has escalated international tensions by threatening to declare the Strait of Hormuz as part of the United States very soon. Speaking on the situation, Trump asserted that Iran is losing miserably and stated his intention to fully claim the strategic waterway after defeating the country. He remarked that the strait is essentially already under such control due to an ongoing blockade, adding that no vessels are permitted to pass unless authorized by Washington.

The provocative statements arrive as the 60-day deadline of a June memorandum of understanding between the United States and Iran has recently expired. Prior to the war, which officially began on February 28, one-fifth of global fuel and liquefied natural gas was transported through the Strait of Hormuz. Currently, Iran has closed the strait while Washington maintains a strict naval blockade on Iranian ports, severely restricting maritime transit in the vital energy corridor.

Public opinion within the United States regarding the conflict remains limited, as a recent Reuters/Ipsos poll indicates that only 35 percent of US citizens support the war. Meanwhile, the domestic economic impact is mounting, with the average price per gallon of gasoline in the United States exceeding four dollars. These domestic pressures form the backdrop against which Trump's aggressive rhetoric regarding the Middle East waterway is unfolding.

Reactions to Trump's comments varied in tone, with observers noting his demeanor during the announcement. Al-Jazeera journalist Kimberly Halkett observed that Trump was smiling while making the remark, making it clear that he himself was not treating the matter with complete seriousness. However, the comments were received with severe gravity and condemnation by military and diplomatic leadership in Tehran.

Major General Amir Hatami, the Iranian Chief of Army Staff, issued a stern warning over the control of the Strait of Hormuz. Hatami cautioned that joking about Iran in such a manner is a major mistake, emphasizing that the nation possesses fighters capable of breaking an adversary's legs. Kazem Gharibabadi further reinforced Tehran's unyielding stance, stating that the strait cannot be seized through tweets, aircraft carriers, executive orders, or election speeches.

Gharibabadi emphasized that the Strait of Hormuz belonged to Iran, currently remains under its purview, and will continue to do so in the future, operating strictly under Iranian directives. He added that until Washington accepts the reality of its defeat and ceases its illusory thinking, Iran will resolutely continue to enforce its blockade across the contested waters.
