Sylhet's Old Central Jail to Become Park and Liberation War Museum
Authorities have decided to transform the old central jail site in Sylhet into an aesthetic park and a Liberation War museum. The Ministry of Home Affairs will transfer the land to the Sylhet City Corporation.
In a significant development for urban development and historical preservation in Sylhet, a definitive decision has been made to construct an aesthetic park and a dedicated museum on the grounds of the city's old central jail. This major infrastructural transformation aims to repurpose a historically significant penal facility into a public space that serves the local community while honoring the nation's heritage.
According to the verified official decisions, the Ministry of Home Affairs has formally agreed to transfer the entirety of the old prison land over to the Sylhet City Corporation. This inter-ministerial and municipal arrangement paves the way for local government authorities to initiate the extensive planning and construction work required for the ambitious urban project.
The comprehensive redevelopment blueprint for the sprawling site outlines two primary public amenities. A portion of the historic land will be developed into a modern, aesthetic park designed to meet the recreational needs of city residents. Additionally, a specialized institution named the Rear Admiral Mahbub Ali Khan Liberation War Museum will be established on one side of the property to commemorate the heroic struggles and history of the liberation war.
Local leadership has welcomed the initiative, highlighting the long-standing desires of the local populace regarding the future use of the historic prison property. Abdul Kaiyum Chowdhury commented on the development, stating that the long-standing expectations of the city residents are finally turning into reality through the creation of the aesthetic park and the Rear Admiral Mahbub Ali Khan Liberation War museum on the old jail premises.
To facilitate the complete vacation and subsequent redevelopment of the historic property, logistical plans have already been put in place for the current occupants of the facility. All prisoners who are presently housed within the old central jail will be systematically relocated to the newly established prison facility located in Badaghat.
The announcement regarding this major urban transformation in Sylhet was officially made on September 17. The project involves various local stakeholders and figures, including Salahuddin Ahmed, Khandaker Abdul Muktadir, Monjur Morshed Chowdhury, Moshiur Rahman, and Mohammad Mostafa Kamal, alongside the active participation of the Sylhet City Corporation and the Ministry of Home Affairs.
