SUST Students Demand Roadmap for Stalled SHAKSU Election

Students at Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) in Sylhet have renewed their calls for the immediate resumption and establishment of a clear roadmap for the stalled Central Students' Union (SHAKSU) election. The demand comes as more than seven months have now elapsed since the much-anticipated campus polls were abruptly halted by legal interventions earlier this year, leaving the student body without representation.

According to the official timeline of events, the SHAKSU and hall union elections were originally scheduled to take place on January 20 of this year. However, the democratic process was brought to an abrupt halt just one day prior, when the High Court issued an injunction on January 19 suspending the election for a duration of four weeks. Since that time, the administrative path forward has remained frozen, causing widespread frustration among the general student population.

In response to the prolonged inactivity, a newly prominent student platform operating under the banner of the 'SHAKSU Recovery Movement' (শাকসু পুনরুদ্ধার আন্দোলন) stepped forward on Sunday night, August 23, 2026. The platform officially issued a detailed press notification outlining their grievances and demanding that university authorities take immediate, tangible steps to bring the election back to life without further delays.

Voicing deep frustration on behalf of the student movement, spokesperson ফয়সাল হোসেন (Faysal Hossain) strongly criticized the administration's current approach during a statement released to the public. He pointed out that although the High Court initially imposed only a four-week timeframe for the suspension, the legal delay has inexplicably stretched on far beyond reasonable expectations, with authorities failing to enact any positive measures.

Faysal হোসেন further elaborated on the worsening disconnect between the student body and the university leadership, stating that despite repeated requests from students to sit down with the administration to discuss the SHAKSU crisis, officials have continued to stall. The student platform believes these delaying tactics are a deliberate attempt to render the election completely inactive, prompting their urgent call for visible administrative action without any further calendar stalling.
