Bangladesh High Court Upholds Death Sentences in Nusrat Murder

The High Court has officially upheld the death sentence of two convicts involved in the brutal murder of Nusrat Jahan Rafi, a case that drew widespread national and international attention. The legal proceedings stem from a horrific incident that took place in Feni, Bangladesh, where the victim was targeted after speaking out against misconduct within her educational institution.

According to the verified facts of the case, the sequence of tragic events began on March 27, 2019. On that date, Nusrat's mother formally accused Siraj Ud Doula, the principal of the Sonagazi Islamia Fazil (Degree) Madrasa, of sexual harassment. This accusation set off a chain of tensions that ultimately culminated in a lethal attack against the young student.

Just days after the complaint was lodged, on April 6, 2019, Nusrat Jahan Rafi was set on fire on the roof of the madrasa building in Feni. The severe injuries sustained during the attack proved to be catastrophic, leading to her being transferred for specialized medical care in the capital city.

Nusrat fought for her life while undergoing treatment at the Dhaka Medical College Hospital, but she succumbed to her injuries four days after the attack, passing away on April 10, 2019. Her death sparked outrage and grief across Bangladesh, prompting intensive legal investigations and judicial proceedings.

During the earlier stages of the judicial process, the trial court previously handed down death sentences to a total of 16 individuals involved in the conspiracy and execution of the crime.
