Students Enter Chittagong Zoo Free by Collecting Plastic Waste
Students in Chittagong are gaining free entry to the local zoo by depositing one hundred grams of plastic waste under a new pilot initiative. Authorities announced the campaign during a district environment and forest development committee meeting.
In an effort to tackle environmental pollution and raise awareness among the younger generation, a unique initiative has been launched at the Chittagong Zoo where students can secure free admission simply by turning in plastic waste. Under this newly introduced program, any student who brings in one hundred grams of plastic waste is granted complimentary entry to the popular facility located in Chittagong.
The pilot program has already seen its first participants take advantage of the eco-friendly offer. On the very first day of the campaign, a total of seven students successfully utilized the opportunity, collectively handing over approximately seven hundred grams of discarded plastic materials at the zoo entrance.
The initiative stems from official directives announced by the Chittagong district administration. Mohammad Zahidul Islam Miah, the Deputy Commissioner of Chittagong, officially declared this decision during a meeting held by the district environment and forest development committee, which took place across recent days on last Monday and today on Tuesday.
Highlighting the critical importance of ecological preservation during the rollout, Mohammad Zahidul Islam Miah made a compelling statement regarding our shared habitat. He remarked, 'This environment belongs to everyone, and we live in this environment. For our habitation, we have no other place except this earth.'
Global context underscores the severe threat posed by plastic pollution to natural ecosystems worldwide. According to data associated with the broader environmental scope, approximately nineteen million to twenty-three million metric tons of plastic waste find their way into aquatic environments such as rivers, lakes, and oceans every single year, necessitating urgent local actions like the Chittagong Zoo campaign.
As the pilot phase continues to unfold, organizers hope that the tangible reward of free zoo access will inspire more students and young citizens to actively participate in cleaning up discarded plastics and protecting the local environment from further degradation.
