State Minister Humayun Kabir Takes on Additional Foreign Ministry Duties
State Minister for Foreign Affairs-1 Humayun Kabir has been assigned additional responsibilities during Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman's absence. The Foreign Minister has travelled to New York to serve as President of the 81st UN General Assembly session.
In an administrative development announced on Sunday in Dhaka, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has issued an official circular assigning additional responsibilities to State Minister for Foreign Affairs-1 Humayun Kabir. Under the newly issued directive, Mr. Kabir will handle all other matters and provide necessary assistance in the absence of Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman, extending beyond his standard designated duties.
Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman departed from Dhaka for New York on Sunday evening. His international travel is necessitated by his upcoming official duties presiding over the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly. According to the ministry's schedule, the Foreign Minister is scheduled to remain in the United States until October 22, during which time State Minister Humayun Kabir will manage the designated portfolio back home in Bangladesh.
Mr. Rahman's tenure as President of the UN General Assembly follows a fiercely contested diplomatic victory that took place earlier this year. On June 2, at the United Nations headquarters, Mr. Rahman secured the presidency for the 81st session by defeating his rival, Andreas S. Kakouris of Cyprus, in a closely watched secret ballot vote that concluded with a tally of 99 to 91 votes.
The current administrative arrangement in Dhaka ensures that the Foreign Ministry will maintain uninterrupted operations while the Foreign Minister represents the country on the global stage at the United Nations in New York. State Minister Humayun Kabir will oversee the ministry's ongoing affairs until Mr. Rahman returns to Bangladesh following the conclusion of his official United Nations engagements on October 22.
