Sonai River Boat Race Held in Sylhet Despite Local Objections

A vibrant traditional boat race competition was successfully held on Friday afternoon on the Sonai River, located in the Bahadurpur area under the Lauta union of Sylhet's Beanibazar upazila. The grand sporting event was organized by the energetic youth community of Lauta and Bahadurpur villages, drawing significant public attention and local spectators to the riverbanks to witness the age-old cultural spectacle.

The competition moved forward despite facing opposition from a local faction and facing promotional campaigns carried out under the banner of 'Tauhidi Janata'. A total of three competitive boats—specifically named 'Pagla Nao', 'Bagh Nao', and 'Swadhin Bangla Nao'—actively participated in the various rounds of the river racing event, showcasing tremendous rowing skill and traditional pageantry.

As the afternoon progressed into the final stages, the concluding part of the race featured fierce competition between the 'Pagla Nao' from Golapganj's Kalijuri and the 'Bagh Nao' from Hakaluki, alongside other entries like Barighram Bazar Mosque, Golapganj's Kalijuri, Hakaluki, Barlekha's Ghorakandi, Beanibazar upazila, Beanibazar police station, BNP, and Mollapur Union Parishad contexts. However, as darkness quickly descended upon the Sonai River, the crucial final race could not be completed, leaving the final outcome temporarily unresolved.

Addressing the gathering as the chief guest, Member of Parliament for the Sylhet-6 constituency, Emran Ahmed Chowdhury, delivered inspiring remarks regarding the preservation of local culture. He stated that boat racing is a deeply rooted tradition of rural Bengal that must be preserved and carried forward. Emphasizing the cultural significance, he added that such boat races do not constitute any anti-religious activity and announced that this exciting competition will be organized and enjoyed collectively every single year.

In addition to addressing the cultural aspects of the region, the chief guest also focused on local infrastructural development during his speech. He assured the public that repair work on the broken roads of the area will be thoroughly undertaken during the upcoming dry season. Furthermore, addressing environmental concerns, he revealed that a formal project has already been submitted to effectively prevent severe river erosion along the waterways, and authorities are hopeful that the crucial mitigation work will commence shortly.

Regarding the conclusion of the interrupted sporting event, M. A. Mannan clarified the current status of the tournament's final round. He officially stated that the final decision regarding the championship has not been settled yet. According to his announcement, a formal meeting will be organized at a later time to thoroughly discuss the matter and officially determine the ultimate winners of the Sonai river boat race.
