Satkhira Dialogue Focuses on Housing Crisis for Low-Income Slum Dwellers
A citizen dialogue in Satkhira addressed the severe housing crisis faced by low-income slum dwellers and climate refugees. Organizers and participants highlighted massive displacement and called for urgent solutions.
On August 20, 2026, a crucial citizen dialogue titled 'Solutions to the Housing Crisis of Low-Income Landless Slum Dwellers in Satkhira' was held at the Mangrove Sabhaghar in Satkhira municipal town. The event brought together numerous prominent figures to discuss the pressing plight of vulnerable populations, including Abu Affan Rose Babu, Gazi Mahida Mizan, Pabitra Mohan Das, Kishori Mohan Sarkar, Madhab Chandra Dutta, M. Kamruzzaman, Mostafizur Rahman Uzzal, Golam Sarowar, Ali Nur Khan Babul, Siddiqur Rahman, Md. Shaheen Islam, Dilruba Ruby, Shakibur Rahman Babla, S.M. Biplob Hossain, Md. Hossain Ali, Hridoy Mondal, Kishor Kumar, Kumaresh Sarkar, Jobeda Khatun, and Mazeda Khatun.
The significant event was organized through the collaborative efforts of the Bangladesh Resource Centre for Indigenous Knowledge (BARCIK), Green Coalition Satkhira, and Samakal. Discussions at the dialogue centered heavily on the compounding pressures of environmental and economic displacement affecting the region. It was highlighted that individuals continuously lose their homesteads due to severe river erosion, devastating cyclones, and escalating salinity, forcing them to flee and seek refuge in urban areas.
Statistical insights presented during the dialogue revealed the staggering scale of the urban demographic shift in Satkhira municipal town. According to the data, one out of every four people living in Satkhira town is classified as a climate refugee and a low-income slum dweller. Out of the city's total population of approximately two hundred thousand residents, an estimated fifty thousand people live as low-income pavement dwellers, in makeshift huts, and within impoverished slums.
The precarious reality faced by these marginalized communities was further underscored by specific historical actions and ongoing economic hardships. In 2024, exactly 104 families were brutally evicted from the Itagachha slum without any proper rehabilitation, under the pretext of widening the Satkhira-Shyamnagar road. Furthermore, the participants noted the extreme financial burdens these residents endure daily, pointing out that slum dwellers are forced to spend nearly thirty percent of their total earnings solely on medical healthcare costs.
The comprehensive citizen dialogue served as an essential platform to bring these alarming statistics and systemic issues into the public eye. By gathering community leaders, organizers, and affected voices under one roof, the event underscored the urgent necessity for comprehensive policy interventions and effective rehabilitation strategies. The collaborative efforts of BARCIK, Green Coalition Satkhira, and Samakal aim to ensure that the fundamental housing and human rights of Satkhira's most vulnerable low-income populations are prioritized in the future.
