Road Transport Minister Rules Out Autorickshaws on National Highways

Road Transport, Railways and Shipping Minister Sheikh Rabiul Alam has firmly stated that autorickshaws are not permitted to operate on national highways. The minister addressed the ongoing issue surrounding the vehicles, emphasizing that while they are barred from major highways, authorities are carefully considering the livelihoods of the many people dependent on the sector.

The statements were delivered on September 8 in Dhanmondi, Dhaka, where the minister attended a program featuring the release of fish fry and a tree plantation campaign. The event was organized by the Dhanmondi Youth Club to promote environmental and local initiatives in the area.

Sheikh Khalid Hasan Jacky, president of the Dhanmondi Youth Club and former convener of the Dhaka Metropolitan East Chhatra Dal, presided over the official event. His leadership underscored the community-level engagement accompanying the ministerial visit and discussions.

Elaborating on the regulatory stance, Minister Alam noted that while the government does not support autorickshaws on national highways, the vehicles currently exhibit a strong presence that requires control. He stressed the urgent need for a specific policy to clearly define where autorickshaws are permitted to operate and where they are strictly prohibited.

The minister highlighted that a comprehensive policy must be formulated through coordination between highway police and related highway management authorities. He reiterated that regardless of future guidelines, national highways will remain off-limits to autorickshaws under any circumstance.

Addressing the socioeconomic footprint of the industry, Alam acknowledged that numerous individuals are now connected to autorickshaws as a vital part of society. Consequently, the administration aims to establish a management framework that resolves existing problems while safeguarding livelihoods through a phased approach.

Furthermore, the minister emphasized accountability and standards within the sector, stating that operators must possess a minimum level of qualification. These crucial aspects will be integrated into a strict policy framework to ensure proper enforcement and regulation going forward.

Alam also touched upon institutional responsibilities regarding infrastructure, mentioning that he works to coordinate the relevant authorities involved. However, he noted that he is often held accountable for the failures of total highway management despite having limited direct involvement and restricted operational opportunities.
