Private Full-Body Health Scans Boom Across the UK Amid Rising Debate

The market for private health MOTs and full-body scans has experienced significant growth over the past two years, with companies such as Prenuvo, Ezra, and Neko Health successfully raising venture capital to expand their operations. Operating in locations including Manchester and London in the United Kingdom, these private healthcare firms offer advanced technological assessments designed to look inside and across the human body long before traditional symptoms might appear to manifest.

Among the prominent market entrants is Neko Health, co-founded by Hjalmar Nilsonne, which currently charges a £299 price tag for its specialized body scan. The demand for these preventative assessments has proven to be remarkably high, with Neko Health presently managing a staggering waiting list of 100,000 people eager to secure an appointment. Highlighting the scale of data collected during these visits, more than 2,000 images were taken of a patient named Ruth's skin alone during her examination.

Defending the preventative model, Hjalmar Nilsonne stated, “While medicine has progressed so much over the past century, primary care is still very basic. Why wait until we see symptoms? The data is super clear - prevention is preferable to cure.” Data provided regarding Neko Health's Stockholm headquarters shows that 4,362 scans were carried out on clients who visited the facility last year. According to these figures, 1.2% of clients discovered life-threatening conditions such as melanoma and leukaemia, another 4% spotted significant health conditions that required further treatment, and 1.2% flagged conditions that could be reversed such as pre-diabetic blood sugar levels.

Despite the identification of these serious medical conditions, the rapid rise of the private screening industry has sparked intense scrutiny from established medical authorities. NHS England has issued official warnings stating that the surging popularity of private body scans can directly lead to over-diagnosis, unnecessary subsequent medical investigations, and entirely avoidable anxiety for patients who undergo the procedures.

Echoing these cautionary perspectives, Prof Victoria Tzortziou Brown of the Royal College of GPs (RCGP) and individual patients have highlighted limitations within the technology. Annabel Mason-Thompson shared her critical experience, stating, “I felt a bit let down if I'm honest. Their AI scanner failed to pick up any of my four cancerous lesions.” Similarly, a patient named Mehvish reported unexpected emotional distress following her appointment, noting, “I expected to feel relief. Instead, I was told that I had a rare form of diabetes.”

Addressing concerns over diagnostic accuracy and system failures, Neko Health co-founder Hjalmar Nilsonne acknowledged the complexities involved in automated medical evaluations. He emphasized, “We know that no one system is foolproof, which is why we have multiple lenses - it is crucial that the technology and human expertise work together.” As venture capital continues to fuel the expansion of companies like Neko Health, Prenuvo, and Ezra across the UK, the debate surrounding the balance between preventative health innovation and the risk of clinical over-diagnosis remains a central issue for patients and practitioners alike.
