The housing and Ashrayan projects located across Patuakhali district have fallen into a severely dilapidated state due to a prolonged lack of essential repairs. This alarming deterioration has left thousands of homeless and helpless families residing within the district facing intense daily suffering and hardship.

Among those enduring these distressing conditions is 85-year-old Rabeya Begum, who originally found refuge in the West Kalikapur Ashrayan project situated in Patuakhali Sadar Upazila back in the year 2003. She had been forced to seek shelter there after losing her ancestral homestead and land to the relentless erosion of the river.

However, the passage of more than two decades has brought little security, as the dwelling now offers scant protection against the elements. The tin roofs of the shelters have become heavily rusted and are now full of holes, causing water to pour directly into the living spaces during even a minor rainfall.

The plight of Rabeya Begum is not an isolated incident within the region, as a broader crisis unfolds across local settlements. A total of 74 housing projects spanning the entire Patuakhali district are currently grappling with this severe structural neglect, leaving countless marginalized residents exposed to the elements.

Without proper maintenance or timely intervention by the authorities, the housing and Ashrayan projects continue to disintegrate over time. Consequently, the vulnerable populations who rely on these government-provided shelters are left stranded in increasingly uninhabitable and precarious environments.
