Kuakata Fisherman Catches Massive 2.1kg Hilsa Sold for Taka 7,200
A fisherman in Kuakata has caught a rare 2.1kg Hilsa fish in the Bay of Bengal, which was subsequently sold at a local fish market for Taka 7,200. The substantial catch has brought rare joy to local fishermen amidst rising living costs that have put the prized fish out of reach for many residents.
A massive Hilsa fish weighing 2 kilograms and 100 grams has been caught in the net of a local fisherman operating in the waters of the Bay of Bengal near Kuakata, Patuakhali. The significant marine catch was pulled from the sea near the Payra Port pipe-buoy area, marking a notable moment for the local fishing community.
The fisherman, Sohrab Gazi, has accumulated ten years of experience fishing in the open sea. Describing the moment of the catch, Sohrab Gazi stated that after casting his net and hauling it back in, the unusually large Hilsa was found trapped alongside other fish. He noted that he has not seen a fish of this size in many years and expressed profound happiness over the haul.
Following the catch, the giant Hilsa was transported to the Kuakata fish wholesale market to be sold. Through a public auction process at the Kuakata fish market, the fish successfully fetched a total price of 7,200 Taka.
The winning bid was placed by Mizanur Rahman, the manager of the local business establishment known as Ma Moni Fish. Explaining his purchase, Mizanur Rahman stated that fish of such a massive size are very rarely seen in the market nowadays, which motivated him to secure it through the auction. He added that he intends to ship the purchased Hilsa to the residence of an expatriate brother living in Shariatpur.
However, the high price commanded by the rare specimen highlights a growing economic divide regarding the accessibility of the national fish. Local resident Jamal Ghorami remarked on the broader local sentiment, stating that whereas he used to be able to buy and eat Hilsa at least once a year, doing so has now become a dream.
