Dead Bottlenose Dolphin Recovered from Kuakata Beach with Rope Tied to Tail
A dead six-foot-long bottlenose dolphin with rope tied to its tail has been recovered from the Char Gangamoti area adjacent to Kuakata sea beach in Patuakhali. Environmental leaders warn that the recurring deaths of marine animals serve as a major warning sign for coastal ecosystems.

On Saturday, a dead bottlenose dolphin measuring approximately six feet in length was recovered from the Char Gangamoti area adjacent to the Kuakata sea beach in Patuakhali. The carcass of the marine mammal was found with a rope tied around its tail, while various injury marks were clearly visible across different parts of its body, raising serious concerns among local environmental organizations and conservation activists regarding the safety of marine life in the coastal region.
Following the discovery, the forest department stepped in and successfully recovered the dead dolphin from the beach area. To ensure proper disposal, authorities from the department subsequently buried the mammal in the soil near the location where it was found. The incident has once again drawn attention to the persistent threats facing marine biodiversity along the coastal belt of Bangladesh, prompting renewed calls for urgent protective measures from various environmental groups including the Coastal Environment Protection Movement, the Kuakata Dolphin Protection Committee, and the Bangladesh Biodiversity Conservation Federation (BBCF), alongside academic institutions like Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University.
Environmental experts and organizational leaders have expressed deep alarm over the continuing fatalities among marine species in the area. Rumon Imtiaz, a prominent figure among the concerned stakeholders, emphasized the severity of the situation by stating that the continuous death of marine animals in coastal areas acts as a major warning sign for everyone. He noted that dolphins and turtles are vital components of the marine ecosystem, and warned that a decline in their numbers could exert negative impacts on the entire food chain, making it critically important to rapidly strengthen coordinated research, surveillance, and awareness-raising activities.
Statistics compiled by conservation organizations highlight a grim and worsening trend regarding marine fatalities along the Kuakata coast over recent years. Records indicate that in 2023, a total of 15 dead dolphins washed ashore the Kuakata coast, followed by another 10 dead dolphins in the year 2024. The situation deteriorated further in 2025, during which 17 dead dolphins were recovered from the same coastal waters, while the ongoing year of 2026 has already witnessed the recovery of 16 dead dolphins along the Kuakata shoreline, underscoring an escalating crisis that local forest department officials under the Mohিপুর Range and various conservation groups are struggling to address.
