A serious health crisis has emerged in Pabna, Bangladesh, following an outbreak of extrapulmonary tuberculosis among patients who underwent surgical procedures at Al-Madina Lab and Hospital. According to verified reports, at least 12 patients have contracted the infectious disease directly at their surgical sites after receiving medical care at the facility. The situation has prompted immediate intervention from regional health authorities and national public health institutions to contain the spread of the infection and determine the exact cause of the contamination.

In response to the escalating health emergency, the local health department took swift administrative action against the medical facility. Authorities officially formed a dedicated three-member committee to thoroughly examine the circumstances surrounding the infections. Furthermore, the health department ordered the immediate suspension of all surgical procedures at Al-Madina Lab and Hospital to prevent any further exposure to incoming patients seeking medical treatment at the Pabna location.

To address the severity of the outbreak, a specialized investigative team was dispatched to Pabna on August 31, 2024. The high-level delegation includes representatives and officials from several prominent public health organizations, specifically the National Tuberculosis Control Programme, the Institute of Epidemiology, Disease Control and Research (IEDCR), and the International Centre for Diarrhoeal Disease Research, Bangladesh (icddr,b). This multidisciplinary team is tasked with conducting a comprehensive epidemiological investigation into how the surgical site tuberculosis infections occurred.

The health department has also formally requested a deeper, specialized investigation by the IEDCR to analyze the clinical pathways and environmental factors at the hospital. As national health experts work alongside local officials in Pabna, the findings from this ongoing inquiry are expected to shed light on infection control protocols at surgical facilities across the region, ensuring that patient safety remains the paramount priority during medical and surgical interventions.
