Mymensingh Zilla School Faces Severe Infrastructure and Teacher Shortages

Mymensingh Zilla School, a historic educational institution located in Mymensingh, Bangladesh, is currently confronting severe infrastructural deficits, a shortage of teachers, and significant gaps in practical education. Founded on November 3, 1853, the institution has a rich 173-year history of providing education, having been established as a full-fledged English school. Over the decades, the institution has been associated with numerous notable historical figures, including Sir Jagadish Chandra Bose, Syed Nazrul Islam, Abu Sayeed Chowdhury, Kaiser Kamal, Mahmudullah Riyad, Bhagawan Chandra Bose, Ananda Mohan Bose, Dr. Ashraf Siddiqui, Upendra Kishore Roy Chowdhury, Nurul Amin, Maulvi Hamid Uddin Ahmed, Abul Kasem Fazlul Huq, Jyotirmoy Guhathakurta, Abdul Monem Khan, M. R. Akhtar Mukul, AKM Mosharraf Hossain, Sultan Ahmed, and Abdus Salam.

Despite its long-standing legacy and prominent alumni, the school is currently struggling with severe day-to-day operational constraints. According to official data from August 24, 2026, the institution currently accommodates 1,708 students enrolled across grades three through ten. However, these students are served by a total of 47 teachers, operating within a limited infrastructure of only 22 classrooms. Furthermore, the teaching staff is currently under-resourced, with three teacher positions remaining vacant, adding further strain to the existing academic faculty.

The physical facilities of the school are also in a state of disrepair, severely impacting the students' daily environment and extracurricular activities. Among the confirmed infrastructural issues, the school's playground suffers from severe waterlogging during the rainy season, depriving students of adequate space for sports and physical recreation. Additionally, the student hostel has remained closed for a long period, causing significant inconvenience for students who require residential facilities to pursue their studies at the school.

Compounding the physical and administrative challenges are notable deficiencies in practical education facilities, which limit the comprehensive learning experience for the enrolled students. The combination of overcrowded classrooms, a shortage of teachers, and closed residential facilities highlights the urgent need for comprehensive administrative intervention and infrastructural rehabilitation to restore the historic school's optimal operational capacity.

Nevertheless, amidst these ongoing infrastructural and staffing hurdles, Mymensingh Zilla School continues to demonstrate robust academic achievements as recorded in recent examinations. In the Junior Scholarship Examination for 2026, a total of 122 students from the school participated, of whom 97 successfully obtained scholarships, with an impressive 48 securing positions in the talent pool. Similarly, in the Primary Scholarship Examination for 2026, 63 students participated, resulting in 48 scholarships achieved, including 26 talent pool awards. These academic results underscore the dedication of the remaining faculty and the resilience of the student body despite the facility limitations.
