Local Government Elections Set for Current Fiscal Year with BDT 6000 Crore Budget
Bangladesh plans to conduct five local government elections within the current fiscal year, backed by a significant budget allocation. Meanwhile, top election and police officials have held crucial security discussions in Dhaka.
The government of Bangladesh has officially announced plans to complete five distinct local government elections within the ongoing fiscal year. This comprehensive electoral roadmap encompasses city corporations, municipalities, district councils, upazila councils, and union parishads. To facilitate the smooth execution of these extensive democratic exercises, an estimated budget of approximately BDT 6,000 crore has been allocated specifically for local government election arrangements.
State Minister for Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Mir Shahe Alam addressed the financial and logistical preparations during a recent inspection. Highlighting the government's firm commitment, he stated that the administration is fully determined to organize the local government elections as scheduled. According to the State Minister, the Election Commission has already been instructed to initiate and finalize all necessary preparations so that the exact sequence of the polls can be determined once commission readiness is confirmed.
During his remarks, State Minister Mir Shahe Alam also reflected on broader national governance and development challenges. He noted that the country did not achieve the desired level of development over the past two decades and pointed out that the current administration assumed office during a period of a fragile economy. Despite these economic hurdles, he emphasized that the government is successfully advancing development activities across the nation.
Furthermore, under the directive of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, the administration is actively pursuing the beautification of various areas alongside ongoing infrastructure development. The State Minister specifically mentioned plans to systematically clean up accumulated waste in locations across the country, followed by extensive tree plantation and beautification initiatives. This broader vision was underscored during his visit to inspect highway beautification works at the Bhanga Bridge area along the Dhaka-Aricha Highway in Savar, alongside local officials including Farida Khanam and Saiful Islam.
In a parallel development in the capital, high-level administrative coordination meetings took place at the Police Headquarters. Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) A M M Nasir Uddin held a strategic meeting with Inspector General of Police (IGP) Ali Hossain Fakir. Speaking on the discussions, IGP Ali Hossain Fakir noted that the talks primarily revolved around local government elections, the establishment of a coordination cell for law and order committees, and the prevailing security situation across various districts and upazilas.
The Inspector General of Police added that law enforcement authorities have been tasked with preparing a comprehensive report on the overall law and order situation throughout the entire country. IGP Ali Hossain Fakir confirmed that this detailed security report will be submitted by the police administration in the very near future to support the upcoming electoral preparations.
